The aim of this research is to reveal the factors shaping the department preferences of students studying at Vocational and Technical Anatolian High Schools (MTAL) based on the views of students, teachers, and parents. A holistic multiple case design, which is a qualitative research method, was employed in the study. The study group consists of 51 students, 27 teachers, and 20 parents selected through maximum variation and criterion sampling methods, who were located in MTALs in the city center of Siirt during the 2025-2026 academic year. The data were collected using semi-structured interview forms developed by the researcher. Face-to-face interviews were conducted, and the resulting audio recordings and written notes were transcribed and analyzed using the content analysis method. The findings were structured thematically based on the perspectives of students, teachers, and parents. The findings indicate that while intrinsic motivational factors, such as vocational interest, aptitude for applied education, and childhood dreams, play a significant role in students' career choices; economic concerns—including job security, high-income expectations, and early employment opportunities—play a much more decisive role in their preferences. Furthermore, it was determined that external factors, such as insufficient scores in the High School Transition System (LGS) and family or environmental pressure, are among the primary compulsions that direct students to specific departments. The views of teachers and parents also confirm that the pursuit of economic security, regional limitations, and family guidance are at the forefront of students' vocational decisions. The constraints of the regional labor market and the low-wage policy in Siirt compel students to base their career decisions on pragmatic grounds, leading them to adopt strategies such as seeking public sector appointments or migrating to other cities. Based on the research results, several recommendations have been developed. These include strengthening guidance and career counseling services in vocational high schools, increasing field promotion activities at the middle school level to enable students to make more conscious department choices, raising family awareness regarding vocational guidance, and integrating vocational education more closely with the local labor market.
