This study was conducted to determine the reactions of four different pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cultivars (California Wonder, Çağlayan F1, Hazine F1, Uslu F1) to the different initial population densities (0, 500, 5000 eggs/plant) of root-knot nematode species Meloidogyne arenaria (Neal, 1889) Chitwood, 1949 and Meloidogyne javanica (Treub, 1885) Chitwood, 1949. Pot experiment was designed in a controlled greenhouse (25±2°C) as a randomized complete blocks design with four replications and the experiment was repeated once. Plant growth criteria (number of leaves, plant height, stem fresh weight, stem dry weight, root weight) were evaluated 8 weeks after nematode inoculation. Roots were rated 0 to 10 scales for gall index, the eggs obtained from roots were counted and the nematode reproduction factor was calculated. As a result of the study, none of the plant growth criteria were not negatively affected by the presence of nematodes, with the exception of the number of leaves in Hazine F1 infected with the low inoculum density (500 eggs/plant) of M. javanica. Although the galling rates in the roots of pepper cultivars generally increased with the high population density (5000 eggs/plant), it was not significantly changed in Uslu F1 inoculated with M. arenaria and California Wonder inoculated with M. javanica. In addition, these two pepper cultivars showed resistance to both nematode species. Çağlayan F1 and Hazine F1 cultivars exhibited a susceptible reaction to M. javanica but a resistant reaction to M. arenaria. The use of resistant pepper cultivars in fields infested with these nematode species will provide an important advantage in nematode control. On the other hand, it should be taken into account that the resistance status of pepper cultivars may vary according to the nematode population, and it should be tested with different populations of these nematode species to determine whether the resistance is stable before recommending them in areas infested with these nematode species.
