Sustainable agriculture practices and global food security goals require the development of eco-friendly alternatives to chemical herbicides, which are intensively used in conventional agriculture. Laser-based physical control methods stand out among these alternatives, offering advantages such as preserving soil structure and eliminating chemical residues. However, the efficacy of this method relies heavily not merely on burning the weed leaves, but on the precise detection and destruction of the "apical meristem" tissue, which enables plant regeneration. This thesis presents a deep learning-based hierarchical weed detection and meristem analysis approach to enable autonomous agricultural robots to guide laser systems with millimeter-level precision. In this study, a strategy was employed to simultaneously detect the general boundaries (canopy) of the plant and its vital growth point by integrating the state-of-the-art Ultralytics YOLOv11 architecture, the JAZO tool (customized for the hierarchical annotation process), and the Meristem Research Tool analysis software developed specifically for this thesis. The proposed method was comprehensively evaluated on the Weed-Crop dataset (representing controlled environments), the CottonWeedDet12 (Weed-AI) dataset (featuring complex field conditions), and the CWFID (Carrot Field) dataset (to test the model's generalizability). Contrary to theoretical expectations, experimental findings revealed that large-capacity models (e.g., YOLOv11x) tended to overfit and experienced performance degradation when trained on limited agricultural datasets. Conversely, the YOLOv11n (Nano) and YOLOv11m (Medium) variants proved to be the most suitable architectures for real-time autonomous systems, demonstrating both high accuracy in meristem detection (mAP@0.50: ~0.78) and processing speeds exceeding 50 frames per second (FPS). Furthermore, cross-validation tests performed on the CWFID dataset demonstrated that the developed hierarchical approach could be successfully applied to different crop patterns via transfer learning. This thesis technically validates that computer vision systems capable of running on edge devices (Edge AI), without requiring high-cost hardware, offer an effective solution for herbicide-free precision agriculture applications with a focus on biological targeting.
