Orhan Veli Kanık'ın şiirlerinde üslûp

Abstract

The poetic movement introduced by Orhan Veli Kanık, Melih Cevdet Anday, and Oktay Rifat Horozcu and systematized in the book "Garip" constituted a significant turning point in Turkish poetry by rejecting meter, rhyme, and traditional poetic conventions and by adopting colloquial language as its primary medium of expression. Although this new understanding initially faced strong criticism, it gradually gained acceptance and secured its place in Turkish literature as the Garip movement. Also referred to as the "Birinci Yeni" (First New), this movement contributed to the diversification and enrichment of Turkish poetry in terms of subject matter, language, and style by bringing the everyday life of ordinary people to the center of poetic expression. As the founder of the Garip movement, Orhan Veli Kanık became one of the leading figures shaping the direction of modern Turkish poetry through his opposition to traditional poetry and his use of everyday language in a free-verse and unrhymed structure. Although he later adopted a more flexible stance by occasionally incorporating formal elements into his poetry, a proper evaluation of his work remains essential for understanding both the Garip movement and a significant phase of modern Turkish poetry. This study, entitled "Orhan Veli Kanık'ın Şiirlerinde Üslûp," examines 25 poems selected from different periods of the poet's artistic career through a micro-stylistic analysis in terms of scope and a descriptive stylistic approach in terms of content. The poems, chosen from "Orhan Veli Bütün Şiirleri," were analyzed under the main categories of language and expression, artistic features, and content, and were further examined through various subcategories. In this context, the poems were evaluated with regard to phonetic structure (vowel and consonant usage), word types and phrases, sentence structure, punctuation and orthography, as well as proverbs, idioms, deviations, aphorisms, and collocations within general language use; in addition, they were analyzed in terms of meter, verse form, verse unit, rhyme, redif, and other elements of harmony, as well as theme, subject, motif, imagery, and associations. Based on these analyses, the study aims to identify the stylistic characteristics of the poet.
