Arabic Poetical Mem û Zîn Masnavi of Sheikh Hattap Efendi from Siirt

Abstract

Ahmed-i Hânî, one of the prominent Sufi scholars of the Eastern provinces during the Ottoman period, left a lasting impact on literary history with his works composed within the framework of the classical literary tradition. Among his most notable works is the Kurdish mesnevi Mem û Zîn, interwoven with mystical symbols and centered on the theme of divine love. Profoundly influencing the cultural and literary life of the region, this work has been translated into various languages and examined from different perspectives. Among these studies, the poetic Arabic translation of Mem û Zîn by Sheikh Khattab Efendi, a distinguished scholar and Sufi from Siirt, occupies a unique place. Although the original manuscript has not survived, a photocopy of the work is available. Despite the loss of its first three and last pages, this copy comprises a total of 2072 couplets. As far as it has been identified, this translation constitutes the only extant versified Arabic rendition of Mem û Zîn, offering a significant contribution to the field. This study consists of three sections. In the first section, the life and literary personality of Ahmed-i Hânî are presented, together with an overview of his Mem û Zîn. The second section focuses on the life, scholarly identity, and works of Sheikh Khattab Efendi. In the third section, Khattab Efendi’s poetic translation of Mem û Zîn is examined through a codicological description, and following the establishment of its authorship, the work is evaluated in terms of its form and content.

Osmanlı dönemi Şark coğrafyasında yetişen önemli mutasavvıf ve âlimlerden Ahmed-i Hânî, klasik edebiyat geleneği içinde kaleme aldığı eserleriyle edebiyat tarihinde kalıcı bir iz bırakmıştır. Onun tasavvufî sembollerle örülü, ilahî aşkı konu edinen başlıca eserlerinden biri de Kürtçe yazılmış Mem û Zîn mesnevisidir. Şark bölgesinin kültür ve edebiyat dünyasını derinden etkileyen bu eser, farklı dillere tercüme edilmiş ve çeşitli yönlerden incelemelere konu olmuştur. Bu çalışmalar arasında, Siirt’in önde gelen âlim ve mutasavvıflarından Şeyh Hattap Efendi’ye ait manzum Mem û Zîn tercümesi özel bir yere sahiptir. Eserin orijinal nüshasına ulaşılamamış olmakla birlikte, elimizde fotokopi nüshası mevcuttur. İlk üç ve son sayfaları eksik olan eserin bu nüshası 2072 beyitten oluşmaktadır. Tespit edilebildiği kadarıyla, Mem û Zîn mesnevisinin Arapçaya manzum olarak aktarılmış yegâne örneğini teşkil eden bu tercüme, alana kayda değer katkılar sunmaktadır. Bu çalışmamız üç bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde, Ahmed-i Hânî’nin hayatı ve edebî kişiliği ele alınarak Mem û Zîn mesnevisi hakkında genel bilgiler verilmiştir. İkinci bölümde, Siirtli Şeyh Hattap Efendi’nin hayatı, ilmî şahsiyeti ve eserleri üzerinde durulmuştur. Üçüncü bölümde ise Hattap Efendi’ye ait manzum Mem û Zîn tercümesi nüsha tavsifi ile birlikte incelenmiş; müellife aidiyeti ortaya konulduktan sonra eser şekil ve muhteva bakımından değerlendirilmiştir.
