Students' Views on the Impact of Social-Emotional Learning Skills on the Processes of Developing Mathematical Identity

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine students' perspectives on the impact of social-emotional learning (SEL) skills on the development of their mathematical identity. The research was conducted using the phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research methods. The study group consisted of 49 students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades in the city center of Siirt, selected through criterion and maximum variation sampling methods. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, recorded with audio devices, and analyzed using content analysis by identifying themes and codes. The findings revealed that students generally perceive themselves positively in mathematics, and their confidence in problem-solving skills is mostly at a moderate level. Moreover, it was found that students’ self-perceptions and their confidence in their problem-solving abilities were closely related. The results also indicated that collaboration with peers played a significant role in the development of students’ mathematical identity, and that students predominantly employed internal coping strategies when managing stress in mathematics. Among the SEL competencies, problem-solving, empathy, stress management, and collaboration were identified as influential factors on mathematical identity. In particular, problem-solving skills emerged as the most critical determinant in the development of students' mathematical identity.

Bu araştırmanın amacı, sosyal duygusal öğrenme becerilerinin matematik kimliğinin oluşumuna etkisine ilişkin öğrenci görüşlerini incelemektir. Araştırma, nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden olgubilim (fenomenoloji) deseniyle yürütülmüştür. Çalışma grubunu, ölçüt ve maksimum çeşitlilik örnekleme yöntemleriyle belirlenen, Siirt il merkezinde öğrenim gören 6., 7. ve 8. sınıf düzeylerinden toplam 49 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Veriler yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler aracılığıyla toplanmış, ses kayıtları çözümlenerek içerik analiz yöntemiyle temalar ve kodlara ayrılmıştır. Araştırma bulguları, öğrencilerin matematik dersinde kendilerini genellikle olumlu algıladıklarını, problem çözme becerilerine olan güvenlerinin çoğunlukla orta düzeyde olduğunu ve bu iki yapının birbiriyle ilişkili olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Ayrıca öğrencilerin, matematik kimliklerinin oluşumunda akranlarıyla gerçekleştirdikleri iş birliğinin önemli bir katkı sağladığı ve stresle baş etmede daha çok içsel kaynaklı stratejilere yöneldikleri belirlenmiştir. Sosyal duygusal öğrenme becerilerinden problem çözme, empati, stres yönetimi ve iş birliği becerilerinin matematik kimliği üzerinde etkili olduğu; özellikle problem çözme becerisinin, kimlik oluşumunda en belirleyici faktörlerden biri olarak öne çıktığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
