This study consists of three main parts. In the first part, a general historical framework is drawn by discussing the social position of women from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic. In the context of women's history in the Ottoman Empire, three main breaking points have been identified: Tanzimat, the Second Constitutional Era, and World War I. Additionally, the changing social role of women was discussed through developments such as the proclamation of the Republic and the adoption of the Civil Code. In the second part, the "beautiful legs contest" of 1925, which has not been examined before, is examined in detail and the social dynamics of the period are tried to be revealed. The third and final section is devoted to the competition organized by the Vakit newspaper in 1931, which forms the focal point of the article. Around this competition, the public's approach to women and their bodies was evaluated along with the modernization process. It has been observed that discussions around the contest of women with beautiful legs are generally shaped around the concept of "morality". This study aims to examine the current polemics in a multifaceted manner, including the discussions in question. Thus, the study aims to provide a new perspective to the literature by examining the women's policies of the Republic, the reactions to these competitions, political-ideological debates, and the position of women through the women with beautiful legs competitions.
