In this thesis, the structural, surface, and thermal properties of graphitic carbon nitride (GCN)–based adsorbents were systematically modified via heteroatom doping (N, O, P, and S), and the effects of these modifications on the removal performance of Pb (II) and Cd (II) ions from aqueous solutions were comprehensively investigated. Pristine GCN was chemically treated with ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, ammonium hydrogen phosphate, and sodium sulfide to obtain N@GCN, O@GCN, P@GCN, and S@GCN materials, respectively. XRD analyses confirmed that the characteristic (100) and (002) planes of g-C₃N₄ were preserved in all samples, indicating the retention of the heptazine-based polymeric framework, while heteroatom doping induced peak shifts and intensity reductions, suggesting enlarged interlayer spacing and decreased crystallinity. FT-IR results demonstrated that the fundamental heptazine structure remained intact, whereas new vibrational features and band broadening indicated the formation of heteroatom-related bonds (e.g., C–O and C–S) and structural defects. XPS surface analyses verified the successful incorporation of heteroatoms into the GCN matrix and revealed significant changes in surface chemical composition, particularly for P@GCN and S@GCN. Thermogravimetric (TG/DTG) analyses showed multistep thermal decomposition behavior, with heteroatom doping altering the degradation pathways and thermal stability of GCN. Adsorption studies for Pb (II) and Cd (II) demonstrated that the experimental data were well described by the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating predominantly monolayer adsorption on homogeneous active sites. Heteroatom-doped GCN materials exhibited significantly enhanced maximum adsorption capacities compared to pristine GCN, with O@GCN and S@GCN showing the highest performance. Kinetic analyses revealed that the adsorption process predominantly followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, suggesting that surface interactions governed the rate-limiting steps. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that Pb (II) and Cd (II) adsorption onto all adsorbents was spontaneous (ΔG < 0) and exothermic (ΔH < 0), and that heteroatom doping rendered the adsorption process thermodynamically more favorable. The study demonstrates that heteroatom-doped g-C₃N₄ materials with tunable surface chemistry and enriched active sites are promising and efficient adsorbents for heavy metal removal in environmental remediation applications.
