Öğe The Effect of Comedy Therapy on Anxiety and Vital Signs in Liver Transplant Recipients during the Preoperative Period: A Randomized Controlled Trial(Wiley, 2026) Saritas, Hasan; Okutan, Serafettin; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Saritas, Serdar; Guven, Durdane YilmazBackground Patients awaiting liver transplantation often experience preoperative anxiety, which may negatively influence vital signs and physiological stability. Brief, low-cost non-pharmacological interventions such as comedy therapy may help reduce anxiety and improve selected physiological parameters. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of comedy therapy on preoperative anxiety and vital signs in liver transplant recipients. Methods This randomized controlled trial was conducted between April 2024 and May 2025 at a liver transplant institute in Turkey. A total of 120 participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 60) or a control group (n = 60). During the preoperative period, the intervention group watched 10-min clips from classic Turkish comedy films, while the control group received only routine care. State-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) scores and vital signs (systolic/diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation) were measured before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26 with p < 0.05 considered significant. Results In the intervention group, STAI scores decreased significantly after comedy therapy (p = 0.001), whereas no significant change occurred in the control group (p = 0.974). Mean pulse, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and respiratory rate decreased, and oxygen saturation increased significantly in the intervention group (p < 0.05). In the control group, only a limited reduction in blood pressure was noted. Between-group comparisons revealed significant differences in respiratory rate and oxygen saturation (p < 0.05). Conclusion Comedy therapy effectively reduces preoperative anxiety and improves selected physiological parameters in liver transplant recipients. Integrating such low-cost, non-pharmacological interventions into surgical preparation may enhance psychological well-being and promote physiological stability.Öğe Optimization of Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of Thymbra Spicata L. Using Response Surface Methodology: Polyphenol Profile and Antibacterial Activity(Wiley-V C H Verlag Gmbh, 2026) Sirin, Muhammed Hasan; Kaya, Muhammet Mukerrem; Demirag, Melike Sultan; Keyvan, Erhan; Bayezit, Murat; Tutun, HidayetThymbra spicata L. (Zahter) is a medicinal aromatic plant naturally growing in T & uuml;rkiye. This study aimed to optimize ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) conditions using response surface methodology (RSM) to maximize its total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity (DPPH). The optimal conditions were established as 31.071% methanol, 63.467 degrees C, 48.423 min, and a 36.14 mL/g solvent-to-solid ratio. The optimized extract yielded TPC, TFC, and DPPH values of 145.77 +/- 2.26 mg GAE/g, 16.19 +/- 0.20 mg QE/g, and 97.794 +/- 1.78 mg AAE/g dry plant material, respectively, demonstrating positive correlations among them. Orbitrap-MS profiling identified rosmarinic acid, quinic acid, luteolin-7-O-glucuronide, and naringenin as the predominant polyphenols. Furthermore, antibacterial assays revealed minimum inhibitory (MIC) and bactericidal (MBC) concentrations of 5 and 10 mg/mL, respectively, against Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes, whereas values for Escherichia coli O157:H7 were >10 mg/mL. Conclusively, RSM optimization successfully yielded a polyphenolic-rich T. spicata extract with high antioxidant capacity and measurable antibacterial activity at higher concentrations.Öğe Macroscopic, Histological and Ultrastructural Features of the Tongue of the Anatolian Wild Boar (Sus scrofa libycus)(Wiley, 2026) Isbilir, Fatma; Kandil, Banu; Atli, Muhammed Zahid; Isbilir, Ihsan; Guzel, Baris CanThis study provides a detailed characterization of the macroscopic anatomy and microscopic features (light and scanning electron microscopy) of the lingual papillae in the adult Anatolian wild boar (Sus scrofa libycus). Tissue samples were taken from two adult wild boars found dead in their natural habitat within an average of 1.5 h. Following macroscopic observation, samples underwent routine histological processing, histochemical staining, and high-resolution surface morphology analysis via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Morphological analysis revealed five distinct types of papillae: filiform, fungiform, conical, foliate, and vallate. Filiform papillae, exhibiting either sharp or blunt apices, showed structural adaptations specialized for mechanical function. Fungiform papillae were identified in circular and oval forms; notably, taste buds were restricted to the circular type. Foliate papillae, comprising 3-5 distinct folds, lacked taste buds. A pair of vallate papillae, each demarcated by a prominent trench and housing lateral taste buds, was observed on the caudal tongue. Histochemical evaluation using Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS) and Alcian Blue (AB) confirmed the presence of both neutral and acidic mucins within the lingual glands. These findings suggest that the lingual morphology of the Anatolian wild boar is closely adapted to its specific dietary habits and ecological niche. This data serves as a critical baseline for comparative anatomy, forensic veterinary medicine, and future morphological research.Öğe Examining the Psychometric Properties of Four Mattering Constructs Through Rasch Modeling: Evidence From Turkish Adolescents and College Students(Wiley, 2026) Kaya, Alican; Green, Zane Asher; Sata, Mehmet; Yildirim, Murat; Sarigul, Abdulselami; Turk, Nuri; Duradoni, MirkoBackground Mattering and anti-mattering are central constructs in understanding individual well-being. Traditionally, these concepts have been studied in offline social contexts. The rise of information and communication technologies has expanded the social environments in which individuals may feel valued or, conversely, insignificant. However, evidence on measurement invariance of these combined offline and online mattering scales for gender and different developmental stages remains limited in culturally diverse countries, including Turkey. Objectives This study aimed to validate four scales assessing both offline and online dimensions of mattering and anti-mattering-the General Mattering Scale, the Anti-Mattering Scale, the Online Mattering Scale, and the Online Anti-Mattering Scale-within a Turkish sample of adolescents and college students. Methods: Data were collected from 888 participants (high school students: n = 434, mean age = 15.51 +/- 1.02, 63.1% female; college students: n = 454, mean age = 21.10 +/- 1.67, 84.1% female). Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were conducted to examine the dimensional structure and reliability of the scales. Additionally, the Many-Facet Rasch Model (MFRM) was applied to test measurement invariance across educational levels and gender. Results CFA results indicated acceptable fit indices for all four scales across both groups, with reliability coefficients exceeding recommended thresholds. MFRM analyses further supported measurement invariance across high school and college students, as well as across male and female participants. Conclusion The four-scale set appears psychometrically sound for use with Turkish adolescents and emerging adults and is well-suited to capturing the complexity of contemporary hybrid social environments, where experiences of significance and neglect can occur both offline and online.Öğe Insecticidal Potential of Essential Oils from Origanum onites, Lavandula angustifolia, and Foeniculum vulgare Against Agonoscena pistaciae: Integrated In Vitro and In Silico Approaches(Wiley-V C H Verlag Gmbh, 2026) Yas, Cemile; Dilmen, Halil; Gok, Mesut; Basar, YunusThis study evaluated the insecticidal potential of essential oils (EOs) obtained from Origanum onites, Lavandula angustifolia, and Foeniculum vulgare against Agonoscena pistaciae. The phytochemical content of the essential oils was determined by GC-MS. Furthermore, molecular docking analyses were performed to theoretically investigate the inhibitory properties of the dominant compounds against the detoxification enzymes glutathione S-transferase (GST) and cytochrome P450. In the GC-MS analysis, the dominant components were identified as follows: O. onites (60.51% carvacrol, 9.73% linalool, and 7.53% cis-cymene); L. angustifolia (25.44% linalyl acetate, 23.47% linalool, and 7.37% cis-cymene); and F. vulgare (49.41% anethol, 14.62% p-anisaldehyde, and 9.35% estragol). As a result of molecular docking, carvacrol showed the strongest binding affinity to both enzymes, surpassing the reference inhibitors metronidazole and coniferil ferulate, achieving docking scores of -5.40 kcal/mol and -5.70 kcal/mol, respectively. Visualization of molecular interactions revealed strong hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic contacts between carvacrol and the enzyme active sites. Biological analyses confirmed that carvacrol-rich O. onites EOs caused significantly higher mortality rates in A. pistaciae larvae compared to other applications and controls. These results demonstrate that carvacrol derived from O. onites is a promising natural insecticide targeting detoxification enzymes in pests and offering a sustainable alternative to synthetic pesticides.Öğe Pharmacokinetics and Bioavailability of Tolfenamic Acid in Calves: First Evaluation of Subcutaneous Administration(Wiley, 2026) Corum, Orhan; Marin, Pedro; Badillo, Elena; Corum, Duygu Durna; Yuksel, Murat; Oguz, Halis; Uney, KamilObjective Tolfenamic acid (TA) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is commonly used in veterinary medicine. However, information on its pharmacokinetics in calves, particularly following subcutaneous (SC) administration, is limited. The aim of this study was to characterize the disposition of TA in calves following SC, intramuscular (IM) and intravenous (IV) administration. Methods Six calves received TA at a dose of 4 mg/kg via each route in a crossover design. Results TA exhibited route-dependent pharmacokinetics. The terminal elimination half-life increased significantly from IV (6.64 h) to IM (12.79 h) and SC (15.11 h) administration, which is consistent with flip-flop kinetics following extravascular dosing. Following IV administration, the volume of distribution at steady state was moderate (0.67 L/kg), which suggests extensive plasma protein binding. The time to reach the maximum concentration was similar for the IM and SC routes. However, systemic exposure was markedly lower following SC administration, with peak plasma concentration, area under the curve and bioavailability being approximately half of those observed following IM injection. Plasma concentrations exceeded the EC50 values required to inhibit prostaglandin E2 and related inflammatory mediators for up to 24 h after IV administration and up to 48 h after IM or SC administration. Conclusions These findings demonstrate that SC administration of TA in calves results in prolonged but reduced systemic exposure compared with IM administration. The results support the need for route-specific dosing considerations and provide a basis for further studies on residue depletion and determination of withdrawal period in food-producing calves.Öğe Sexual Monomorphism and Size-Related Shape Change in the Beak of the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus)(Wiley, 2026) Gunay, Ebuderda; Deveci, Emine Irem; Tezsay, Nilay; Korkmazcan, Aycan; Manuta, Nicoleta; Melnyk, Oleksii O.; Guzel, Baris CanBackground The avian beak is a functionally important structure shaped by ecological demands. In highly specialized filter-feeders such as flamingos, subtle variation in beak size and shape may influence feeding performance. However, the relative contributions of sexual dimorphism and allometry to beak shape variation remain unclear in Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus). Objectives This study aims to evaluate sexual dimorphism and size-related shape variation in the beak of adult Greater Flamingos using two-dimensional geometric morphometrics. Methods Standardized dorsal and lateral beak photographs were obtained from 40 adults of known sex (15 females, 25 males). Fixed landmark configurations (7 dorsal and 12 lateral landmarks) were digitized and analyzed using landmark-based geometric morphometrics. Generalized Procrustes analysis was used to obtain Procrustes shape coordinates and centroid size, and principal component analysis was performed to summarize major axes of variation. Sex effects were tested using permutation-based Procrustes ANOVA, and allometry was assessed using Procrustes regression including sex and size & times; sex interaction terms. Results Sex was not a significant predictor of beak shape in either view (dorsal: R2 = 0.005, p = 0.971; lateral: R2 = 0.038, p = 0.120). Dorsal shape showed a significant allometric component (logCS: R2 = 0.123, p = 0.002), whereas lateral allometry was weaker and not significant at alpha = 0.05 (logCS: R2 = 0.047, p = 0.055). No sex-specific allometric trajectories were detected. Conclusions Adult Greater Flamingos exhibit sexual monomorphism in beak shape, and observed variation is partly explained by size-related shape change, particularly in the dorsal configuration.Öğe Phenotypic and Genotypic Characterization of Antimicrobial Resistance in Thermophilic Campylobacter Species Isolated From Faecal Samples of Chicken and Turkey(Wiley, 2026) Yesilyurt, Muazzez; Gulaydin, Ozgul; Gulmez Saglam, AliyeBackground: Thermophilic Campylobacter species cause significant economic losses in cases of enteritis in poultry. Objective: The aim of this study was to isolate and identify Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter lari from chicken and turkey faeces samples using bacteriological and molecular methods. Also, to determine the antibiotic susceptibilities and antibiotic resistance genes of the isolates. Materials and methods: Within the scope of the study, 201 cloacal swab samples were collected from 132 chickens and 69 turkeys. Phenotypic and genotypic examinations were performed on the isolates obtained for resistance to various antimicrobial agents. Results: Campylobacter spp. was isolated from 38.30% of the samples. PCR (polymerase chain reaction) analysis identified 63.63% of the isolates as C. jejuni and 23.37% as C. coli. The highest resistance rates of the isolates were determined against cephalothin (81.81%), nalidixic acid (72.72%) and aztreonam (61.03%). Multidrug resistance was found in 50% of Campylobacter spp. strains. The highest susceptibility in C. jejuni and C. coli strains was observed against gentamicin (95.91% and 100%). Statistical analyses demonstrated no significant differences between C. jejuni and C. coli with respect to most of the antibiotics tested (p > 0.05). However, a statistically significant difference was observed for nalidixic acid (p = 0.009). The bla(OXA-61) gene tested positive in 79.71% of the phenotypically ampicillin-resistant isolates. The tet(O) gene was identified in 72.2% of tetracycline-resistant isolates and the aphA-3-1 gene in 5.8% of aminoglycoside-resistant isolates. The ERY2074 and ERY2075 genes were identified in 50% and 78.57% of the 28 isolates with erythromycin resistance genes, respectively. The cmeA, cmeB and cmeC genes were identified in 51.28%, 79.48% and 25.6% of the strains that developed multidrug resistance, respectively. The Thr-86-Ile point mutation was found in 92% of the isolates that carried the gyrA gene responsible for quinolone resistance. Conclusion: The high susceptibility of the isolates to gentamicin in vitro suggests that gentamicin could be a potential agent for limiting Campylobacter colonization in poultry.Öğe Molecular Characterization and Prevalence of Anaplasma ovis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Goat Population in Siirt Province From Türkiye(Wiley, 2026) Selcuk, Muhammed Ahmed; Karakus, Tamer; Ozen, Rustu Erdem; Ceylan, Ceylan; Ceylan, OnurAnaplasmosis is a major tick-borne infectious disease affecting small ruminants, leading to significant economic losses due to decreased productivity and, in some cases, mortality. This study aimed to determine the molecular prevalence of Anaplasma ovis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum infections in goats raised in Siirt province, T & uuml;rkiye, and to genetically characterize the detected isolates based on the major surface protein 4 (MSP4) gene region. A total of 250 randomly selected apparently healthy goats were sampled between July and September 2025. The overall molecular prevalence of A. ovis was found to be 52% (130/250), while A. phagocytophilum was not detected in any of the screened animals. Significant associations were observed between A. ovis positivity and age, sex, breed, and sampling districts within Siirt province (p < 0.05), with the highest infection rates observed in goats older than 1 year (63.6%), female goats (58.2%), Damascus goats (66.7%), and goats sampled from the Kurtalan district (87.1%). Sequencing analysis of selected samples yielded high-quality MSP4 gene sequences showing 100% nucleotide identity with reference A. ovis isolates from Iran, Italy, Pakistan, Sudan, Tunisia, and T & uuml;rkiye. Phylogenetic analysis supported species-level identification by grouping the study isolates with reference A. ovis sequences; however, broader evolutionary inferences should be interpreted cautiously due to the short fragment length and limited number of sequenced isolates. The findings of this study provide updated molecular epidemiological data on caprine anaplasmosis in southeastern T & uuml;rkiye and highlight the utility of the MSP4 gene as a reliable molecular marker for species identification and phylogenetic analysis. These results contribute to a better understanding of the epidemiology of A. ovis and may support the development of effective control strategies in small ruminant production systems.Öğe Reference Intervals for Schirmer Tear Test and Intraocular Pressure in Healthy Hamdani Crossbred Sheep(Wiley, 2026) Sulu, Kadir; Akgul, Mustafa Baris; Gulaydin, Ali; Yilmaz, Maruf; Erden, Bahar; Turgut, Ali OsmanBackground Breed-specific reference intervals for the Schirmer tear test (STT) and intraocular pressure (IOP) in Hamdani crossbred sheep have not been established. Objectives To determine reference intervals for STT and IOP in healthy Hamdani crossbred sheep. Methods A total of 200 clinically healthy animals were stratified into four age groups: < 6 months, 6 months to 1 year, 1-2 years, and > 2 years. Each group comprised equal numbers of males (n = 25) and females (n = 25). Tear production was evaluated using STT-1, and IOP was measured with a rebound tonometer. Group-based mean values were calculated using representative values obtained by averaging measurements from both eyes. Results Mean values and reference intervals for STT and IOP were established for each age group. No sex-related differences were observed in STT values. However, age-related differences were observed only in females, with higher STT values in hoggets than lambs (p < 0.01). For IOP, ewes had higher values than rams (p < 0.01). Age-related differences in IOP were observed only in males, with rams showing lower IOP values than suckling lambs and hoggets (p < 0.01). Conclusions This study establishes reference intervals for STT and IOP in healthy Hamdani crossbred sheep and provides clinically relevant baseline data for ophthalmic assessment.Öğe Trimester Specific Anatomical and Histological Characterization of Testicular Descent and Development in Sheep Foetuses(Wiley, 2026) Guzel, Baris Can; Kandil, Banu; Atli, Muhammet Zahid; Isbilir, Ihsan; Melnyk, Oleksii O.; Isbilir, FatmaBackground This study aimed to investigate the morphological, histological and ultrastructural characteristics of prenatal testicular development in male Hamdani crossbred sheep foetuses. Methods A total of 17 male foetuses with gestational ages ranging from 50 to 125 days were examined. Gestational age was estimated using crown-Rectum length (CRL) measurements and the foetuses were classified according to trimester. Macroscopic evaluations were performed to determine the position of the testes in relation to the abdominal cavity, inguinal canal and scrotum. Testicular length, width and weight were measured and statistically analysed. Histological examinations were conducted on paraffin sections stained with Crossmon's trichrome, while ultrastructural features were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Results Testicular descent was observed to begin around Day 50 of gestation and progressed toward the inguinal canal; however, complete descent into the scrotum had not occurred by Day 125. Morphometric measurements showed a significant increase in testicular size and weight with advancing gestational age. Histological findings revealed the progressive formation and organization of seminiferous tubules, the presence of Sertoli and Leydig cells, and the development of interstitial tissue. SEM observations provided detailed visualization of the surface architecture and cellular organization of the developing foetal testes. Conclusion This study provides a comprehensive developmental timeline of testicular organogenesis in Hamdani crossbred sheep foetuses. The findings contribute to the understanding of foetal reproductive biology and offer valuable anatomical data for comparative developmental studies and the evaluation of congenital testicular disorders.Öğe Whole genome insights into hydrocarbon degradation and antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus epidermidis CSR1 isolated from oil-contaminated soil(Springer Heidelberg, 2026) Acer, OmerA crude oil-degrading bacterial strain, CSR1, was isolated from oil-contaminated soil collected in Diyarbak & imath;r, southeastern T & uuml;rkiye, for this study. The strain has been identified as Staphylococcus epidermidis using 16 S rRNA gene analysis and whole-genome sequencing. The entire genome of strain CSR1 was found to be 2,595,333 bp in length, exhibiting a GC content of 32.12% and comprising 2,396 protein-coding sequences, 61 tRNA genes, and 16 rRNA genes. Genome-based taxonomic investigation by digital DNA-DNA hybridization verified that the strain is classified as S. epidermidis. Analysis of the resistome utilizing the CARD and ResFinder databases identified several antimicrobial resistance determinants, including multidrug efflux pump genes (norA, sdrM, norC, mdeA, and sepA) and antibiotic inactivation genes (blaZ, FosBx1, and dfrC). Genome annotation identified a putative alkB-like alkane degradation-related gene, exhibiting significant similarities to an LLM class flavin-dependent oxidoreductase. A phylogenetic study indicated that this enzyme is part of the oxidoreductase family and may be involved in hydrocarbon degradation pathways. Gas chromatography study revealed that strain CSR1 degraded 91.7% of n-alkanes (C6-C29) in crude oil after seven days of incubation. These findings offer genetic and functional insights into the hydrocarbon-degrading capabilities of S. epidermidis CSR1 and underscore its potential significance in the bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated environments. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first genome-based characterization that integrates hydrocarbon degradation genes and antimicrobial resistance profile of a petroleum-degrading S. epidermidis strain that was isolated from oil-contaminated soil in southeast T & uuml;rkiye.Öğe Opportunistic Osteoporosis Screening from Routine Knee Radiographs Using a Deep Learning-Based Texture-Branch Cross-Attention Network(Springer, 2026) Kurt, Mehmet; Gedik, Mehmet Ali; Kestel, Selim; Kurt, Hasan Samet; Yilmaz, Selcuk; Ozdemir, CuneytThis study systematically investigates the impact of architectural components on deep learning-based osteoporosis screening using knee radiographs from a single-center archive. A total of 580 posteroanterior and lateral knee radiographs (normal: n = 389; osteoporosis: n = 191) were included. ImageNet-pretrained backbones (ResNet50V2, VGG16, and DenseNet121) were progressively extended with texture channel packages, dual-stream (global + texture) cross-attention fusion, ordinal-aware supervised contrastive loss, and input-conditioned learnable test-time augmentation (L-TTA). All models were evaluated by fivefold stratified cross-validation using the out-of-fold area under the ROC curve (OOF AUC). TBA-Net v1 achieved the highest performance (OOF AUC = 0.8727), exceeding the strongest baseline VGG16 (0.8497) by 0.0230 AUC and ResNet50V2 (0.8101) and DenseNet121 (0.8092) by 0.0626 and 0.0635 AUC. Ablation analysis demonstrated that the texture branch, cross-attention mechanism, and contrastive loss reduced performance when introduced sequentially, but produced a synergistic effect when jointly optimized; a Shapley decomposition showed that this gain arises from the interaction between components rather than from any component alone. L-TTA Net (OOF AUC = 0.8427) generated clinically interpretable attention patterns. At the current dataset scale, performance plateaued at approximately 0.87 OOF AUC, indicating that further improvements are constrained by sampling variability rather than architectural complexity. Architectural components in small medical imaging datasets should be evaluated within a holistic optimization framework rather than in isolation, and learnable test-time augmentation weights provide interpretability beyond predictive performance. The framework is positioned as a triage aid for prioritizing densitometry referral rather than as a substitute for it.Öğe On the recoverability of cognitive levels in educational text: a multi-task transformer analysis(Springer Heidelberg, 2026) Alhajahmad, BasharArtificial intelligence systems have demonstrated strong performance in educational reasoning and classification tasks; however, the extent to which transformer-based representations encode structured cognitive abstractions remains insufficiently understood. This study investigates the recoverability of cognitive levels from educational question-answer text using a Cognitive-Conditioned Multi-Task Transformer (CC-MTT) framework. To ensure methodological rigor, a leakage-controlled dataset reconstruction pipeline was developed using question-level partitioning and majority-vote label stabilization. The proposed framework jointly models reasoning and cognitive classification, enabling analysis of predictive performance, representational structure, and stability across multiple random seed initializations. Experimental results show that fine-grained Bloom taxonomy levels remain only weakly recoverable from text-only representations, achieving performance close to random baseline under leakage-controlled evaluation. In contrast, hierarchical abstraction (higher-order vs. lower-order thinking) consistently achieved higher predictive recoverability across multiple runs, although quantitative geometry analysis revealed limited cluster separability in the learned embedding space. Statistical analysis further indicated a consistent trend toward improved binary abstraction performance compared with fine-grained categorization, despite the absence of strong statistical significance under Wilcoxon testing. These findings suggest that coarse-grained cognitive abstraction may be partially encoded in transformer representations, while fine-grained pedagogical categories remain structurally difficult to recover from textual representations alone. The study provides methodological and analytical insights for the development of more reliable AI-driven educational assessment systems.Öğe Effects of albendazole treatment on sperm parameters of ram experimentally infected with cystic echinococcosis(Springer, 2026) Celik, Figen; Gungor, Ibrahim Halil; Uslug, Muhammet; Cakir-Cihangiroglu, Aslihan; Sonmez, Mustafa; Simsek, SamiCystic echinococcosis (CE) is a chronic zoonotic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus, primarily affecting the liver and lungs of livestock but also capable of inducing systemic alterations through oxidative stress and metabolic imbalance. These systemic effects may impair reproductive physiology in male animals. This study aimed to investigate the effects of CE infection and subsequent albendazole (ABZ) treatment on sperm quality parameters in rams. Fourteen male lambs were experimentally infected with E. granulosus eggs, and after the establishment of infection, six were treated orally with ABZ (7.5 mg/kg) every 30 days for three months, while others served as untreated controls. Semen samples were evaluated using computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) for motility and kinematic parameters, as well as for sperm concentration, viability, and abnormality rates. CE infection alone led to decreased motility, sperm concentration, and alterations in kinematic parameters such as linearity (LIN), straightness (STR), and amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH), reflecting impaired sperm trajectory and coordination. ABZ-treated animals exhibited a more pronounced decline in total and progressive motility and in kinematic parameters (straight-line velocity-VSL-, average path velocity-VAP-), suggesting potential microtubule- or mitochondria-associated functional alterations. No significant changes were detected in sperm viability. These findings indicate that both CE and ABZ may adversely influence sperm function, possibly through oxidative and cytoskeletal mechanisms. However, the absence of an uninfected ABZ -only control group limits the ability to distinguish independent drug-related effects from infection-associated alterations.Öğe The Links Between Parents' Self-Stigma, Parental Burnout, Parental Competence, and Socio-Emotional Adjustment Among Parents of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Jun, 10.1007/s10803-026-07405-1, 2026)(Springer/Plenum Publishers, 2026) Aktu, Yahya; Togluk, Sabri; Vural, Bilal[Abstract Not Available]Öğe Extremely low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic fields induce apoptotic, oxidative stress, inflammatory and aquaporin-related kidney alteration(Springer, 2026) Pekince Ozoner, Merve; Seker, Ugur; Sert, Cemil; Tuysuz, Mehmet Zahid; Yuksel, Meral; Gokce, YasinExtremely low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic fields are used as a biotherapy method in various medical and experimental applications. However, the cellular effects of prolonged or intense exposure remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of two different ELF-PEMF doses on kidney tissue over an 8 week period, investigating oxidative stress, apoptosis, inflammation, and aquaporin expression using biochemical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical methods. Forty male rats were assigned to control, sham, 1 mT, and 5 mT groups; the 1 mT and 5 mT groups were exposed to ELF-PEMF for four hours daily for eight weeks, while controls received no intervention. At the end of the experiment, kidney tissues were collected for histopathological (H&E and PAS), immunohistochemical and biochemical analyses. In kidney tissue exposed to ELF-PEMF, hyperemia, tubular degeneration, and proteinaceous casts were observed. 1 mT and 5 mT ELF-PEMF exposure increased BAX, Caspase-9, and TNF-alpha immunoreactivity compared to the control and sham groups, while no change was observed in BCL-2 expression. 5 mT group exposure to ELF-PEMF increased AQP3 expression, a critical water channel in cellular H2O2 permeability (p < 0.05). AQP5 expression was significantly increased in both the 1 mT and 5 mT groups compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Biochemical analyses showed that oxidative stress levels were significantly increased in both the 1 mT and 5 mT groups compared to the control group (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that, despite its recent use for its therapeutic properties, long-term exposure to ELF-PEMF may cause oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammation in renal tissue and alter the histological structure and cellular homeostasis. [GRAPHICS] .Öğe The Links Between Parents' Self-Stigma, Parental Burnout, Parental Competence, and Socio-Emotional Adjustment Among Parents of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder(Springer/Plenum Publishers, 2026) Aktu, Yahya; Toguk, Sabri; Vural, BilalPurposeThe experience of parenting a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often entails unique psychological challenges. Although research on parental stress and adjustment has expanded considerably, the mechanisms through which parents' self-stigma (PSS) influences parental burnout, perceived competence, and socio-emotional adjustment remain insufficiently theorized. The aim of this study was to examine the longitudinal links among PSS, parental burnout, parental competence, and socio-emotional adjustment among parents of children with ASD.MethodsThe study employed a cross-lagged panel design with two waves of longitudinal research conducted at six-month intervals. The sample consisted of 182 parents (54.9% female) with a mean age of 40.59 years (Standard deviation = 7.12). Correlational analyses were conducted to examine associations among PSS, parental burnout, parental competence, and socio-emotional adjustment variables, while mediation analyses were performed using structural equation modelling.ResultsThe results indicated that higher levels of PSS significantly increased parental burnout, which in turn reduced parental competence. Lower parental competence was subsequently associated with poorer socio-emotional adjustment.ConclusionThese results provide important insights for mental health professionals and intervention programs, highlighting the need to address self-stigma and burnout to foster parental competence and socio-emotional well-being in families of children with ASD.Öğe In Vitro Effects of Cerium Vanadate (CeVO4) Derivatives on Paraoxonase (PON1) Enzyme(Springer, 2026) Onay, Yasin; Celik Gul, Gulsah; Kurtulus, Figen; Kerimak-Oner, Mine Nazan; Demirci, Tuna; Kaya, Mustafa OguzhanCerium vanadate (CeVO4)-based materials have attracted attention due to their diverse physicochemical and biological properties; however, their interactions with detoxification-related enzymes remain insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated the in vitro effects of alkaline earth metal-doped CeVO4 derivatives (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) on human serum paraoxonase-1 (PON1) paraoxonase activity. PON1 was purified from human serum by hydrophobic interaction chromatography (Sepharose 4B-L-tyrosine-1-naphthylamine), and enzymatic activity was measured spectrophotometrically using paraoxon as the substrate. Inhibitory effects were assessed across multiple concentrations, and IC50 values were determined from concentration-response curves. All derivatives exhibited concentration-dependent inhibition of PON1 activity, with IC50 values ranging from 117 to 213 & micro;M. Mg-and Ba-doped CeVO4 derivatives demonstrated the strongest inhibition at higher doping ratios, whereas Ca-doped derivatives showed reduced inhibitory potency with increasing substitution levels. These findings indicate that dopant identity and concentration significantly influence the interaction between CeVO4 derivatives and PON1. The study provides insight into metal oxide-enzyme interactions and highlights the importance of dopant-dependent effects in evaluating the biological and potential toxicological behavior of engineered vanadate-based materials.Öğe The Stranger at Home: Lived Experiences of Online Gambling Within the Family in Siirt, Türkiye(Springer, 2026) Bektas, Ahmet; Toprak, Adnan; Solmaz, Mustafa; Solmaz, Fatih; Erbas, Sefa; Iliter, Seyfettin; Parlar, YasinOnline gambling is a growing public health concern whose harms extend to the family, yet its familial consequences remain underexplored in contexts where gambling is illegal and extended-family ties are strong. This study examined how men who gamble online perceive gambling to affect their families in Siirt, T & uuml;rkiye. Using a qualitative exploratory design, in-person semi-structured interviews with nine married or previously married men who currently or formerly gambled online (recruited via purposive and snowball sampling) were analyzed with a hybrid deductive-inductive, codebook thematic analysis (Fereday & Muir-Cochrane, ), informed by the six phases of Braun and Clarke (). Four themes were identified: entry into online gambling and the experience of addiction; the internal disintegration of the nuclear family; the household's economic collapse and drift into crime; and the extended family, stigmatization, and the cultural framing of harm. Participants perceived gambling to erode communication and trust, dispossess the household, and displace men from the provider role, while family responses followed conventional gendered lines-disrupting the material division of roles while reactivating a traditional gender order. Distinctive contextual mechanisms emerged, including the extended family's collective debt-clearing in exchange for religious oaths and the operation of stigma through kinship networks that threatened collective family honor. Because all participants were gamblers, the findings reflect their perceptions of family impact rather than the direct experiences of affected others. The results extend a predominantly Western evidence base and underscore the need for culturally sensitive, family-inclusive support that works with existing kinship structures while protecting those most burdened.
