Abstract

Magazines (mecmuas) initially emerged in the form of personal notebooks and, over time, developed within a certain arrangement and order, becoming works of literary and cultural importance. In addition to reflecting the compiler's personal taste and knowledge, these works also contain traces of the literary understanding and cultural characteristics of different periods. In line with the information they contain, mecmuas are important sources not only for literary studies but also for different disciplines such as history, history of religions, linguistics, folklore, astrology, folk medicine, and gastronomy. Poetry magazines have a special importance in that they reflect the poetic taste of the period in which they were written and serve as sources for the Turkish poetic tradition. Magazines, which are among the main sources contributing to the expansion of divans in terms of volume, also help bring to light the poems of poets who do not have a divan. In this respect, journals undertake an important function in identifying and compiling the scattered poems of poets. The work examined in this study is the Poetry and Song Magazine (poetry ve song magazines), whose compiler is unknown, registered in the Ali Emîrî Müteferrik Collection of the Millet Library under number 8136 and bibliographic record number 98654. The study consists of three main sections: the examination of the magazine, the preparation of the transcribed text, and its classification according to MESTAP. The journal includes poems by poets who lived between the 14th and 19th centuries. The content of the magazine comprises 73 poems belonging to 39 poets, 90 poems whose authors could not be identified, and poems written in two different languages, one in Arabic and one in Persian. Some of the poems in the journal were composed in the aruz meter, while others were written in the syllabic meter. In terms of the number of poets and poems, as well as the diversity of verse forms and poetic genres, the magazine possesses a very rich content. The fact that the final part of the magazine (folios 50a–53b) is in prose, and that it includes some poets not mentioned in the sources as well as poems not found in the divans of certain poets, are among the main features demonstrating the importance of the work.
